Few people use the word wireless to describe a radio anymore,
but BT might be about to bring the term back into currency with
its new Internet Radio, which wirelessly connects to your Wi-Fi
network. Calling this product a radio is actually doing it
something of a disservice – it will certainly play radio, but
above and beyond even the most sophisticated of DAB (Digital
Audio Broadcasting) radios, it can play thousands of stations
from around the world, utilise the on-demand features usually
only found on radio stations' websites and even stream your
digital music collection from your home computer.
特性
The radio uses Reciva's
service and, apart from the outer shell, is almost identical to
the
Acoustic Energy Wi-Fi Radio we reviewed last year. There's
nothing wrong with that – the Acoustic Energy version was the
best device we'd seen that included built-in speakers, but this
BT version improves on the sound quality by adding stereo.
Reciva offers 6,509 stations to listen to and included all the
ones we could think of. Visit the website if you want a preview
of what you'll find on the player. The ability to use the
on-demand services supplied by the BBC and certain other
stations is also very useful, especially since you can also
choose where in the program you want to start listening.
The media player aspect will tie in to Windows Media Player to
play your tracks, including playlists you've set up yourself.
However, if you use iTunes or something similar, you'll have to
share your music folders or simply run a UPnP (Universal Plug
and Play) media server (like
TwonkyMedia) on the side.
性能
To test the device we set it up in a fairly average domestic
setting – with the Wi-Fi router positioned on a different floor
and a small handful of computers vying for the attention of the
network every now and then. We started the radio playing in the
morning and it's still going as we write this later in the
afternoon. Sound quality is pretty good – you wouldn't want to
use it to run a disco or anything, but for a little portable
device like this, the built-in speakers are fine. The most
disappointing aspect of the performance is that it isn't
compatible with WPA2, the current best standard for protecting
your Wi-Fi network, though standard WPA and less attractive WEP
can be used instead.
易用性
One of the things we didn't like were the buttons – words rather
than symbols are used to describe the functions, which takes
away the at-a-glance usability you get with the standard
play/stop/skip symbols. There are also only six available preset
stations, and although a shift key expands this to 12, it's easy
to fill them up and wish for more, especially when you've got
several thousand radio stations to choose from.
The instruction manual suggests using Windows' folder-sharing
feature to play your digital music through the device, and this
is fine to get you started. However, a better way – also
described in the manual – is to set up Windows Media Player as a
UPnP server, which means you can create playlists on your
computer and have them streamed to your radio. This isn't quite
so straightforward, but it makes life easier in the long run.
Value for money
This powerful device is certainly
more expensive than a digital radio, but it has significantly
more features. There are other products around that will do
similar things but the benefit of this one is that it uses
Reciva's excellent system, has built-in speakers and is £50
cheaper than its Acoustic Energy rival.
Verdict
This is more expensive but
infinitely more sophisticated than a DAB radio. The extra
functionality means you can do more with your radio, while
the breadth of stations offers something for everyone,
including those who are after a truly international service.
The added option of streaming your digital music makes it a
viable proposition as an all-round audio device for any room
in the home.
